Buying XMR

How to Buy Monero Without KYC in 2026: 5 Ways That Still Work

Binance, OKX and Kraken in Europe have all dropped XMR, and LocalMonero is gone. Here is where people actually get Monero now, what each route costs, and the mistakes that make a no-KYC purchase traceable anyway.

Short version
  • Quickest: swap another coin for XMR on an instant swap service or aggregator. Minutes, no account.
  • Most trustless: a BTC-to-XMR atomic swap with eigenwallet.
  • Paying with a bank transfer or cash: a Haveno network such as RetoSwap, or Bisq.
  • Always: send the XMR straight to a wallet you control, never to another exchange account.

Two years ago most people bought Monero on a big exchange and withdrew it. That route is mostly closed. What replaced it is a mix of swap services, peer-to-peer markets and wallet apps, and they work well once you know which one fits the amount you are buying and how you want to pay.

Why it got harder

Large exchanges have been dropping XMR under pressure from regulators and banking partners:

ExchangeWhat happenedDate
Huobi (now HTX)Delisted XMR with six other privacy coinsSeptember 2022
OKXDelisted XMR trading pairs5 January 2024
BinanceDelisted XMR worldwide20 February 2024
KrakenRemoved XMR in Ireland and Belgium, then the whole EEAMay 2024, then 31 October 2024
LocalMoneroThe main peer-to-peer market closed14 May 2024

Kraken still lists XMR in some regions outside Europe, so check your own account. A survey of exchanges for German users in October 2026 found no EU-regulated exchange offering XMR at all.

More is coming in Europe. From 10 July 2027, Article 79 of the EU anti-money-laundering regulation stops banks and crypto service providers from keeping accounts that allow "anonymity-enhancing coins". MiCA already requires EU trading platforms to keep coins with built-in anonymity off their books unless they can identify holders. Neither rule addresses owning XMR in your own wallet.

Before you buy: get a wallet

Set up a wallet first, so the coins go straight to you. Our wallet guide covers the options. Cake Wallet on a phone or the official GUI on a computer are both fine starting points. Write down the seed phrase on paper before you receive anything.

Then create a fresh subaddress (an address starting with 8) for each purchase. It costs nothing and stops different sellers from seeing that they paid the same wallet.

1. Instant swap services and aggregators

This is how most people get XMR today. You send Bitcoin, Litecoin, USDT or another coin to a swap service, and it sends XMR to your address. There is no account, and a typical swap finishes in 10 to 40 minutes, depending on how many confirmations the coin you are sending needs.

Aggregators such as Trocador and Swapnoir ask many swap services for a quote at once and show you the best rate. Trocador also rates each partner by how likely it is to ask for identity checks, and has an onion address. Our Instant swaps and Aggregators drawers list the services we have checked.

Know the catch. A swap service can hold a transaction it considers risky and ask for proof of where the coins came from. That is rare for ordinary amounts, but it happens. Reduce the odds by using partners with a good KYC rating, avoiding coins that came straight from a mixer or a flagged address, and splitting very large amounts. Also read the terms: Trocador's, for example, restrict residents of the US and the EEA.

2. BTC to XMR atomic swaps

An atomic swap removes the middleman. Your bitcoin is locked in a contract that only pays the other side once their Monero has reached you; if they never send, you get your bitcoin back after a timeout. eigenwallet, which grew out of the 2021 COMIT research and was previously called UnstoppableSwap, wraps this in a desktop app for Linux, macOS and Windows, with Tor built in and market makers who set their own rates.

It is slower than an instant swap, because it waits for Bitcoin confirmations on both legs, and you need BTC to start with. For anyone holding bitcoin in self-custody, it is the cleanest way to get XMR without trusting a third party with the funds.

3. Haveno networks: RetoSwap

Haveno is open-source software for peer-to-peer trading, the closest thing to LocalMonero today. It runs over Tor and keeps each trade's funds in a 2-of-3 Monero multisig, so no exchange ever holds your money. The Haveno project itself does not run a trading network; independent networks do.

The largest is RetoSwap (formerly Haveno-Reto). Its published fees are 0.1% for makers, 0.8% for takers paying in crypto and 2% for takers paying in fiat. Sellers accept SEPA, ACH, PayPal, cash by mail and others, and there are desktop builds plus an Android app.

The trade-off is speed and effort: you wait for a counterparty, both sides post a security deposit, and bank payments take as long as banks take.

4. Bisq 1

Bisq is the older peer-to-peer exchange, and BTC/XMR is one of its busiest markets. Use Bisq 1: the newer Bisq 2 does not support Monero yet, though atomic swaps are on its roadmap. You need bitcoin to trade there, so it works best if you already hold BTC.

5. Swaps inside your wallet

Several wallets have swaps built in, which saves copying addresses between apps:

  • Cake Wallet: ChangeNOW, Trocador, LetsExchange, Exolix and others, plus decentralised routes such as Chainflip and NEAR Intents.
  • Monerujo: Exolix.
  • Stack Wallet: third-party partners.

These use the same providers as the swap sites, so the same caution about holds applies. The benefit is that the XMR lands straight in the wallet you are already using.

Step by step: a first purchase with an instant swap

  1. Create a new subaddress in your Monero wallet and copy it.
  2. Open an aggregator, choose the coin you are sending and "XMR" as the coin you receive, and enter the amount.
  3. Pick a quote. Look at the KYC rating and the estimated time, not only the rate.
  4. Paste your subaddress and check the first and last six characters against your wallet.
  5. Send the exact amount to the deposit address you are given, from a wallet you control.
  6. Wait. The XMR shows up in your wallet within minutes once the swap is processed, and becomes spendable after 10 confirmations (about 20 minutes).

For your first swap, try a small amount first. It costs one more network fee and confirms that the address and the service work.

Mistakes that undo the privacy

  • Swapping straight into another exchange account. Send to your own wallet.
  • Funding the swap from a KYC exchange withdrawal and then sending the XMR back to a KYC exchange. Both ends know who you are, which is the setup behind most public "Monero was traced" stories.
  • Reusing one address everywhere. Use a new subaddress per counterparty.
  • Using a random public node. It can log your IP address. Use your own node or connect over Tor.

None of this is legal advice. Owning and swapping Monero is legal in most places, but the rules vary by country and change, and taxes still apply.

Frequently asked questions

Can I still buy Monero on Binance or Kraken?

Not on Binance, which delisted XMR on 20 February 2024. Kraken still lists XMR in some countries, but stopped offering it to customers in the European Economic Area on 31 October 2024, after earlier removals in the UK, Ireland and Belgium.

Is buying Monero without KYC legal?

In most countries, owning Monero and swapping it in your own wallet is legal, but the rules differ by country and change often, and tax obligations still apply. Some swap services refuse customers from the US or the EU in their terms. Check your local law; this article is not legal advice.

Will the EU ban Monero in 2027?

Not for individuals. From 10 July 2027 the EU anti-money-laundering regulation (AMLR, Article 79) stops banks and crypto service providers from keeping accounts that allow anonymity-enhancing coins. It does not address holding XMR in your own wallet.

What replaced LocalMonero?

LocalMonero stopped trading on 14 May 2024. The closest replacements are peer-to-peer networks built on Haveno, of which RetoSwap is the largest, and Bisq 1, which still has an active BTC/XMR market.

How do BTC to XMR atomic swaps work?

You lock bitcoin in a contract that only releases when the other side's Monero lands in your wallet, so neither party can run off with the funds. eigenwallet (formerly UnstoppableSwap) is a desktop app that does this with market makers over Tor.

What is the cheapest way to get XMR without ID?

For small amounts, an instant swap from Bitcoin, Litecoin or a stablecoin is usually cheapest and fastest. For larger amounts, compare an aggregator's quote with an atomic swap or a Haveno offer, because spreads differ more than fees.
